Inquiry-Based Approaches for Active Student Learning  EDT# TBD

Author: Tabatha Stover  Ph.D

This course introduces educators to the 5E Instructional Model, a research-based, inquiry-driven approach to teaching and learning. The 5E model—comprising the phases Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate, and Evaluate—supports a constructivist approach that encourages students to build understanding through active involvement in the learning process.

The outcomes of this course for educators would include:

  •  Understanding the 5E Model: Educators will gain a clear understanding of the BSCS 5E Instructional Model and how its five steps—Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate, and Evaluate—work together to create an effective learning experience.

  • Skill in Designing Inquiry-Based Lessons: Educators will learn how to create lesson plans that are inquiry-driven, allowing students to actively explore concepts and learn through hands-on experiences. This promotes a deeper understanding of the material.

  • Enhanced Student Engagement: By using the 5E model, educators will be able to create lessons that capture students' interest from the start (Engage) and keep them involved throughout the learning process, making learning more exciting and meaningful.

  • Encouraging Critical Thinking: The course will help educators foster critical thinking in students by giving them opportunities to explore ideas, ask questions, and apply what they've learned in new contexts (Elaborate). This builds analytical and problem-solving skills.

  • Assessment Skills: Educators will learn how to effectively evaluate student understanding (Evaluate) in a way that supports ongoing learning and improvement, rather than just testing for recall.

  • Adaptability Across Subjects: Since the 5E model can be applied to any subject area, educators from all disciplines will be able to adapt these strategies to fit their teaching, making learning more interactive and comprehensive in any classroom setting.

  • Overall, the course will help educators create more engaging, student-centered learning environments that foster deeper understanding, critical thinking, and greater student success. Teachers will leave the course with a self designed lesson plan, excellent resources, assessment tools, and an in depth understanding of the BSCS 5E Instructional Model.
